Craig Field, MPH, PhDDirector
Craig Field (Associate Professor and Director of Latino Alcohol and Health Disparities Research Center) received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from UT Southwestern Medical Center and a Master’s degree in Community Health from the UT Houston School of Public Health. Dr Field’s primary research interest are addressing alcohol related health inequities among Hispanics. He has conducted several large randomized clinical trials on brief motivational intervention in the trauma care setting to reduce binge drinking among Hispanic males. This has culminated in the development of a culturally enhanced brief motivational intervention. The culturally enhanced brief motivational intervention may help further reduce alcohol use and related consequences among Hispanics. Further, it will inform current knowledge regarding the mechanisms of change underlying their effectiveness. Dr Field’s research has been funded by the National Institutes on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institute on Drug Abuse and Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute. He has authored or co-authored more than 50 publications addressing the effectiveness of brief interventions and their contribution to reduce alcohol related health inequities among Hispanics. As a result of my commitment to alcohol related health disparities, he has been recognized as a Health Disparities Scholar by the NIMHD as a National Health Disparities Scholar. In addition to research, he has been a part of national efforts funded by Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to disseminate this evidenced based approach to reducing alcohol problems among injured patients. He is currently funded by the Paso del Norte Health Foundation for the dissemination and implementation of screening and brief motivational intervention in criminal justice, academic and health care settings throughout the El Paso community. Dr Field is a licensed psychologist in the State of Texas with extensive training in the use of motivational interviewing and its application to brief motivational intervention in academic, judicial and health care settings. He is Associate Professor at UTEP and teaches Motivation and Emotion, Health Psychology and Health Behavior Interventions. He serves as area head for the Clinical Master’s degree in Psychology. In addition to serving as Director of the Latino Alcohol and Health Disparities Research Center, Dr Field is leading a campus wide, interdisciplinary research agenda that adopts a biopsychocultural approach to better understanding the role of culture and impact of cumulative stress on health status and health outcomes among Hispanics. To that end, he has established an Interdisciplinary Alcohol Research Group and the Culture and Health Community of Practice.
